Methodology

How we get to 2,000+ useful SME responses, fast, every time.

Our methodology has been refined through hundreds of UK SME surveys and is built on three principles: a real engaged audience (not bought-in respondents), disciplined sample design and an AI-augmented analyst workflow. Here is exactly how a Trends Research project comes together.

The five stages

From your brief to your deck (and your press release).

Two project tracks, one methodology. Full strategic projects and whitepapers move through all five stages over 10 working days. Press-led, headline-ready research compresses stages 1–5 into 3 working days while keeping every quality control in place.

Stage 01 · 2 working days

Brief, design & cross-cut planning

We work with you to translate the strategic or comms question into a research instrument. Questionnaires are designed by senior researchers, never templated. Crucially, we plan the cross-cuts up-front — by sector, region, business size, growth stage and decision-maker role — so the data answers the question before fieldwork even starts.

Output: approved questionnaire, sample plan and cross-cut spec.

Stage 02 · 3–5 working days

Panel recruitment & live fieldwork

Surveys go live to our 750,000-strong UK SME panel via Business Matters channels, sector-specialist titles and direct outreach. Soft and hard quotas are managed in real time to hit the cross-cuts agreed in stage one. Response is monitored daily and we keep you updated with live counts.

Output: live response dashboard, daily progress note.

Stage 03 · within fieldwork

Quality control & weighting

Every response is screened for engagement (speeders, straightliners, contradiction checks) before it counts. Final data is weighted to authoritative business-population benchmarks — ONS UK Business Counts data by SIC, region, size band and turnover. Weighting is transparent and documented in every report.

Output: clean, weighted base.

Stage 04 · 2 working days

AI-augmented coding & analysis

Where projects include open-text responses, our analysts use AI tooling to accelerate code-frame development, theme extraction and sentiment classification — typically compressing 3–4 days of manual coding into a few hours. Every AI-generated code frame is human-validated before it informs reporting. The analytical judgement on what the data means remains with our senior team.

Output: validated code frame, themed open-text analysis, sentiment cross-tabs.

Stage 05 · 1–2 working days

Reporting & storyline

You receive an executive deck with a single-page headline summary, charted findings, segmentation read-outs and recommendation slides. For PR-led projects we also build a press storyline: the headline statistic, supporting cross-cuts, spokespeople-ready quotes and a regional or sectoral angle for tailored pitching.

Output: insight deck (PowerPoint & PDF), raw data tables, optional press storyline doc.

AI in our workflow

Where AI helps — and where it doesn't.

We've integrated AI tooling where it materially improves speed or depth, but we're deliberate about where it adds value and where human judgement remains in charge.

Where AI adds value

Open-text coding: theme extraction across thousands of responses in hours rather than days, with validated code frames.

Sentiment & emotion classification: consistent, scaled tagging that would be inconsistent across human coders.

Cross-survey benchmarking: rapid comparison of current results with prior Trends Research waves and external data.

Draft narrative scaffolding: first-pass reporting structure for analyst review and rewrite.

Where humans stay in charge

Questionnaire design: senior researchers only.

Sample & quota design: built by hand to the cross-cuts your brief actually needs.

Weighting decisions: chosen and documented by our analysts against ONS benchmarks.

The "so what": every recommendation in a Trends Research deck is written by a human analyst who understands UK SMEs.

Compared to a generalist panel

Why generic B2B research underdelivers on SMEs.

Generic B2B panels

Lean heavily on enterprise and mid-market job titles. SME owners — the actual decision-makers in the segment that powers 60% of UK private-sector employment — are typically under-represented and under-engaged.

Response samples for SME-specific cuts often drop below 300, making sector or regional claims fragile.

Trends Research

Our panel was built for UK SMEs through the most trusted SME publishing brand. Engagement, trust and panel freshness are categorically higher.

The 2,000-response floor is set precisely so robust UK regional, sector and size-band cross-cuts are always possible.

Methodology FAQ

Detailed questions, answered.

Are you MRS-compliant?

Yes. All Trends Research projects are conducted in line with the Market Research Society Code of Conduct and ESOMAR principles, including GDPR-compliant data handling.

How is the panel maintained?

Our panel is continuously refreshed through Business Matters editorial, daily newsletter signups and engagement with the broader Capital Business Media audience. We monitor panel attrition and engagement scores, and prune inactive respondents quarterly.

How do you weight the data?

To ONS UK Business Counts: by SIC section, business size band (employee count and turnover band), and region. Weight efficiencies are reported transparently in every project.

Can you reach hard-to-find sectors or job titles?

Yes — through both our main SME panel and the sister CBM titles (Fund Manager Today for finance, EV Powered for clean mobility, Property Portfolio Investor for property, etc.). We will tell you up-front if a niche is too small for a robust quantitative sample, and propose a qualitative complement instead.

What's the smallest project you can run?

Our 2,000-response floor applies to public-facing or press-ready research. For internal-only proprietary projects we can run lower bases (e.g. 500-600) where strategic justification supports it — but we will say so plainly in the report.
